Quinto Shipping orders ‘Parsifal’ inland tanker from Concordia Damen
The inland shipping yard Concordia Damen in Werkendam received an order last week to build and outfit an inland tanker for Quinto Scheepvaart B.V. based in Zwijndrecht. Quinto, a family-owned company, is also making the transition from container shipping to tanker shipping after 25 years.
Quinto Scheepvaart has opted for a tanker of the Parsifal type, a new generation of mineral (oil and light chemicals) tankers developed by the yard itself, with several already operational. This type of tanker measures 110 x 11.45 meters and has a high carrying capacity with very shallow draft (2,875 tons at 3.25 meters). The efficient hull design creates an optimal speed-power curve, allowing the ship to achieve high speeds with relatively low power: more than 22 km per hour with 2 x 500 kW engines.
The aft section will be divided into two accommodations: one for the family and one for the crew. Additionally, the design will be adjusted to accommodate specific owner preferences. CCM3, part of Concordia Damen Shipbuilding, has been chosen for the fitting and finishing.
Inland shipping entrepreneur Luit Nanninga of Quinto says, “We had been planning to enter the tanker industry for some time. We had already come to Werkendam for repairs and were interested in the Parsifal tankers. After a conversation with Chris Kornet, we visited the yard and inspected the ships. What particularly appealed to us was that this type is designed to combine low resistance and shallow draft with a large cargo capacity. This makes the ship more efficient and environmentally friendly per ton transported. Another advantage is the ability to use smaller propellers, which is very useful during low river levels. We quickly concluded that this ship was essentially suitable for us. Both my sons then went on a trial run, after which we decided to make a contract for construction and finishing. Of course, we had some specific wishes, and we had good discussions about them. Concordia Damen picked up on our wishes well and adapted the basic design accordingly. We are very much looking forward to seeing our new ship become a reality.”
Bert Duijzer, Technical Manager at Concordia Damen, says, “Quinto Scheepvaart is a new client for us, and we are grateful to Luit Nanninga and his sons Nick & Renko for this order and the trust they have placed in us. It is also further evidence for us that we made the right decision to build some of our proven designs in stock. Besides several dry cargo ships we are building in stock, this tanker was already under construction, allowing us to shorten the delivery time by months. Availability played a role in the purchase, but for Quinto, it was about the overall picture. Think of the combination of the proven Parsifal Tanker design, lead time, approach, quality, and performance.”
Parsifal inland tankers are designed so that the propulsion type can be customized per ship to meet the customer’s requirements: diesel-electric, diesel-direct, or LNG-electric. This has also been done here. The ship, with its home port in Zwijndrecht, will be powered by Caterpillar engines and is Stage V compliant. The tanker is expected to be delivered within a year, in December 2023.
